4 Atrocious Ideas for SEO Marketing (and 5 Brilliant Ones)

4 Atrocious Ideas for SEO Marketing (and 5 Brilliant Ones)

Are you a marketing manager who wants to make the most out of your investment in search engine optimization? Then pin this essential list of do’s and don’t’s on your cork board:

DO:

1. Target your SEO marketing geographically. By focusing on niche or local markets, you can actually beat the “big dogs” – even on popular keywords

2. Link build with relevant sites and blogs. Two ways to speed up this process: 1) create info-rich content and an easy interface to attract traffic naturally. 2) Garner “reciprocal links” by reaching out to other great sites in your niche community.

3. Update your SEO content regularly. The search engines LOVE fresh, relevant copy.

4. Test your online marketing search engine optimization ideas early and often. Be brutal. Find the flaws before you “go public.”

5. Use web analytics to track how users respond to your site and how/when leads convert. The more data you have, the more finely-tooled your SEO marketing strategy can be.

DON’T:

1. Duplicate website copy to “fool” search engines like Google and Yahoo into thinking you have more relevant information on your site than you actually do. Search engine spiders use powerful algorithms to “sniff out” bogus or duplicated content, and they will actually punish you by lowering your rankings.

2. Choose your keywords willy-nilly. If you aim too broadly with your keywords, you will burn money unnecessarily by going up against irrelevant competitors, and you’ll reduce the percentage of leads to your website who are likely to convert. If you aim too narrowly, you will overlook segments of your consumer base, and you’ll yield a bad ratio of dollars-spent to visitors-attracted.

3. Switch domains frequently. Search engines typically reward sites for longevity by giving them a ranking boost.

4. “Borrow” copyrighted materials or content from other sites without permission. The search engines and/or the pillaged sites will find out, and your reputation (online and offline) could suffer.

If you have a web design company, try finding a SEO company to work with. My company was strictly graphics and web design, and for over a year I outsources all of my SEO jobs to a company I liked. Over the time, I slowly picked up things (all for free) and now I would consider myself very well versed in the field. I have now merged my company with the other to create http://www.Webmosa.com – I am very happy with the way I learned. Plus, if you plan to sell the service you are at least getting trained by actual professionals in the field. SEO changes over time, and one needs to stay on top of the game in order to be the best. Google "Tacoma SEO", within 1 month of the merger and launch of our new site we are already 5th on page one – crushing other companies that have been around for years.

To be the best, learn from the best. SEO books and blogs are often out dated.

As long as your SEO person is:

    1) conducting a serious competitive analysis on your competition
    2) is targeting the right keywords
2.1) casting a wide net with low hanging fruit keywords
    3) ensuring your site structure is sound
    4) you are using effective url structures and not some scripted output gibberish urls like yourdomain.com/script.php?yada-bla#$%%
    5) ensuring your site is active in publishing new information with text and other media formats that is easily crawlable
    and
    6) Acquiring quality backinks, one way backlinks and use of a good anchor text strategy

    …yes it can be done.

An aged domain that has some backlink history can help quite a bit dependent on the competitiveness of your core keyword phrase(s) you're going after. New sites occasionally have difficulty, way ranking #1 organically for the term 'mortgage' if you know what I mean.

    Hope this helps.

A few hundered dollars will be hard to do, since most of the really good tools out there will eat up your budget. For some BI check out a product called "ranking manager" and check out "compete.com" . KeywordDiscovery is a good tool, but costs a lot. A good way to learn about keywords is to run a small PPC campaign and use direct words "ohio vacations" instead of ohio vacations which will display ads even if someone searches "vacations out of ohio". This will give you an idea of what terms are searched most on google, as the impression count will show you how many searches there were.

Good luck…lots of reading is a head of you.

Aaron Wall's SEOBook.com is the best, by far. Also, the info at SEOmoz.org is solid.

I'm not connected to either of these organizations, although I know the people involved with them from the SEO industry.

  11. Brian D says:

You obviously have a basic grasp of SEO in order to consider this. The key to this ensuring that you do your keyword research correctly and there is onl one tool to use – Google keyword tool (just do a search).

There are many SEO applications/programmes that profess to ensure 'seamless SEO' – if you really must go down this route the two best free options (they are not fully fuctional, but will assist) are IBP and WEB CEO. Invest time reading the in built help section and you should be able to get a lot of help from them.

Please remember – SEO is a specialist practice and these tools should keep you right – they will not automatically get your site ranked for you.

Just one last point – don't use any of the autosubmit tools to submit your site to search engines, I would recommend tha, as with all SEO and online marketing, you get this done professionally – it is your business after all. Good luck!

    Hope this helps
