It seems like times are always tough for small businesses, but no time is worse than during a recession. During a recession, many businesses try to cut back on as much as possible, but when does cutting back start to hurt the company? One of the places this question is most often applied is to the question of SEO. Should a small business pay for SEO when money is tight?
Unfortunately, many small businesses axe their advertising budget first. While this can be a good place to save a little bit of money, if businesses completely cut their advertising, they will not be able to attract new clients. Without new clients, there’s little they can do to make more money. While word of mouth may help somewhat, it’s not as effective as a marketing blitz.
While web marketing is cheaper than doing offline marketing, there are still costs involved. However, you may get a much higher return on your investment since you’re able to more deeply analyze how well your marketing is doing. Since websites allow users to track where their traffic comes from, it’s easier to identify and cut any online marketing that is not working. To this end, small businesses should not immediately cut their SEO budget when times get tight.
Some small businesses may not have even invested in SEO yet, and these businesses may be asking why they should spend the money. However, those small business owners may not recognize just how great a return they can get on their SEO. A huge return on investment is everything in a recession, and doing SEO is ranked as one of the top ROI solutions.
By selecting specific keywords and phrases, you’re very specifically targeting your audience. While ads in magazines may get a lot of attention, you never really know if your target audience is viewing the ad or if it is being viewed by someone who will never purchase your product. SEO, however, makes certain your website is being viewed by those who are looking for what you offer. It brings in more than just quantity; it brings in quality visitors and provides them with information about your website right away.
When it comes to dealing with SEO, small businesses have a few choices. They can either handle the SEO themselves or they can hire a professional SEO company. The first is obviously the most budget-friendly; however, if you and your employees don’t understand the basics of doing SEO, you may end up wasting your time. Fortunately, you can learn the basics of SEO fairly quickly.
Paying a company to do SEO, especially if the company is thorough and completely redesigns your website from the ground up to be fully optimized, may be out of your price range. Many small businesses simply can’t afford this. However, having an expert in SEO look at your pages can be helpful. Outsourcing only part of the SEO process can be helpful. For example, you may want to hire a professional SEO writer to create content for your website after you determine the keywords yourself.

How much money is spent on SEO each year?Im looking for a national/world average. I know more and more companies are expected to spend a ton but I would like some sources that tell how much is expected to be spent on SEO. Thanks guys.

Really depends on what you are trying to do. Do you know the niche you are in. What keywords are most relevant to your market. The basics first then you could go into software. I use 6 different suites for tracking promotion and landing page variant testing you name it. Have a game plan and go from there.
I used web ceo when I first started and was pretty solid.
Your titles are too confusing. Make it idiot proof…. tell them what you do in your name.
You don't want to make it difficult for people to figure out what you do.
Add solutions to the end of your name or come up with something proprietary like "The King Of SEO" If you are targeting local biz try putting your towns name in your title to dominate local search engines.
Do your keyword research, what are people searching for? Build your name around the top searches.

SEO is a scientific game these days. My advice to you is read a couple of good articles on SEO from a trusted source. Form a belief system of your own. Then find a company you are comfortable will execute and critique your plan.
Otherwise you may buy a bottle of snake oil.

Unfortunately, you have chosen a business that is tremendously crowded online. It will be very hard to rank for any related terms that will send you actual visitors. I recommend that you not pay for SEO for that site. Instead, pay for promoting your site through blogs instead.
Many blog owners are open to paid advertising on their blogs and most charge very affordable rates for the ads offered. Please feel free to call me for additional clarification on this. But i will gladly explain how you can take the money you were going to pay for SEO and get real visitors to your website.
I have been doing SEO for over 10 years and selling you SEO services for what appears to be a Yahoo store is unethical, in my opinion. This company should know better and seems to be more interested in taking your money than actually helping with your business.
I may be wrong about the company you have contacted, but Yahoo stores are very hard to rank and are generally not the best choice for online businesses that hope to receive natural search traffic to a business website. They should have told you that up front, before they provided you a quote.
First of all, do you have a business or marketing plan? Those are needed to ensure that the business is well planned and you can identify your strengths and weaknesses and with that, you can come up with solutions to strengthen your strengths and conquer you weaknesses.

Google’s Search Engine places a low priority on Meta Keywords & Meta Descriptions, but a higher priority on off page links as illustrated at the end of this video.
Since Google is the most used search engine world wide, many web developers have placed a lower priority on keyword research. Instead, they focus on link sharing between other popular sites or blogs.
MS Bing still places a high priority on meta keywords, but typically only looks at the first 150 characters.

SEM or SEO? SEM is Pay per Click (e.g. Google Adwords) and SEO is to improve on your organic (free) ranking in Search Engines.
I recommend to check the SEO and/or SEM Buyers Guide from MarketingSherpa (if you are a US advertiser). They are not cheap but worth the investment (I own them myself).

I am re-vamping and marketing a website for a small industrial fastener company and have run into the same question. After much internal debate, and a ton of research, we have decided to go after the "secondary" niche-words.
My reasoning is this: If you primarily use the most searched for words, you are going to be up against the big guys in your industry. These guys get clicks, traffic and as such, search ratings, in a large part from name/brand recognition, and from the fact that human nature will naturally lead people to the bigger companies. I know we can't compete at that level, and by using those keywords, I would be attempting to de-throne the kings.
Also, if paying for ads on search engines, again, if you use the most popular terms, the big guys will have the ad prices way up and it would cost a small fortune to even get listed at #10 or #11, so why try. Again, go after the niche words.
But my third reason is, research has shown that when using a search engine your searches become much more specific when you are actually getting ready to buy. The research also shows that when researching, only general terms are used. Hence, database management software, might be used for research, and client management database would be used when you know what to buy.
For these 3 reasons, we are going with the niche words.
