    I believe that this company is mislabeling its employees as contractors. They are not managing the taxes and SS deductions for you. They never have to pay you benefits. You are using their computer and other tools in their office, and under their direction, in order to do this work.

    I would look at the following five areas of this job as further evidence that you are an employee and not a contractor: control, ownership of tools, chance of profit, risk of loss, and payment. While I do not have the time to get into each of those factors in this posting, I would recommend that you do an Internet search on each of these in order to learn the difference between an employee and a contractor.

    Tomorrow, I would approach them and ask that they hire you on as a full-time employee. You should state that you were under the distinct impression that this is how you were going to be hired on to begin with. If they are not willing to do that, then I would advise that you quit.

    If they cannot be open and honest with you, then what makes you think that they are going to be open and honest with anybody else? No organization is completely honest and trustworthy. But is an organization that is as blatant as this in being dishonest worthy of your services? Besides, you've already stated that you've refused to do several of the unethical SEO tasks that they have been pushing you to do, and that you are not into black hat SEO practices. This should raise several red flags in your mind, and only continues to serve as further evidence that you are an employee who is under their control (and not a contractor).

    I recognize that you really need the income right now. But you have to look after your career and make sure that you work for reputable companies. If I were you, I would continue to look for someone else who is worthy of your services.

    And yes! What they are doing IS illegal. While it would be difficult to ever prosecute them criminally, you and other employees would probably win several civil rulings against them.

    Also, you do not need to register a separate business name in order to be a contractor, and hence, be running your own business. The only requirement is that you do business in your own name.

    If you want a gut reaction…I'd say you are online to get increased traffic, but I DEFINITELY wouldn't lose sleep over it. Your question already offers a postscript to my learning on the subject.

    Keep in mind, SEO is a constantly evolving creature…like the Internet. Whenever I hear that Yahoo or Google or the many other playahs are tweaking it, I feel like I did whenever Alan Greenspan made a new announcement about the Fed rate and the economy. You never really know what affect their changes will make, but it's always an experience to try to figure it out. And each time business owners learn a little more.

    The popular Answer is, pad the search engine pockets with advertising hit cash, but for some of us, that really isn't a present option.

    It can hurt in a way that they would do different things excluding each other. Can be harmless but depends. If you attend give a job to 2 SEO specialists, better one make onsite SEO work and other do just link building.

    It is important that you protect yourself from the scammers and the those who think they know SEO but don't. It is an unregulated activity and the are literally thousands of bad SEOs for every good one – be careful!

    I would suggest that you start by looking here http://www.seoconsultants.com/ and here http://www.sempo.org/directories/

    Draw up a list of (say 10 – 15) companies whose web presence and spectrum of services meet with your approval. Then make a simple initial approach to these companies and reduce to a short list (3-5) based on the quality of their response and their understanding of your requirements. Interview the companies on your shortlist and include the following questions in your interrogation:

    1. Ask for 5+ references and current clients and make sure you follow them all up. When speaking with the referees if you are not entirely happy ask for another 5+ references.

    2. What type of reporting will they provide?

    3. Do they offer Return On Investment (ROI) analysis? You want a YES here!

    4. Can they assure you that the optimization strategies and methods used will be ethical and hence guarantee no penalties for your website?

    5. Do they place a link on their clients sites to their site? You want a NO here!

    6. Ask to see a sample contract. Check that it says 'what is' and 'what isn't' required on the clients part and details what they say they will do.

    7. How many hours will they put into working on your site?

    8. Make sure you will not be 'ransomed' if you decide not to use them any more at some stage.

    9. Do they outsource any of the work? Better if they have all the expertise in-house.

    10. What results can you expect and over what time scales?

    If during the course of your interviews you are told something you don't understand don't rely on searching the web for information.
