10 Practical Ways Search Engine Optimization Companies and Clients Can Get Along

10 Practical Ways Search Engine Optimization Companies and<br />
Clients Can Get Along

Even the best of intentions can go awry without careful
attention to details and expectations. We’ve tested these
methods out and they work.

1. Get it in writing. Define the service scope in detail
(i.e. we’ll research keywords and optimize these pages with
approved search phrases for this long).

2. Return phone calls. That goes both ways. If the
consultant needs some feedback, don’t wait three days. If the
client calls, don’t wait three hours. It doesn’t sound fair, but
it makes sense. Consultants need help, but clients deserve more
attention (prompt responses).

3. Don’t overwrite changes. SEO consultants can easily
overwrite source code if they’re not careful. Web site owners
sometimes overwrite the very optimization steps a consultant put
in place. Talk to each other and work out protocols to avoid
these problems.

4. Return e-mail messages. Like phone calls, e-mail
messages deserve a quick response. Hitting “reply” is easier
than picking up a phone and dialing a bunch of numbers. Clients
and consultants shouldn’t let a day go by without a response.

5. Own up to mistakes. Painful and embarrassing as it is,
admit mistakes. They can include failing to return a phone call
and poor communication in a written report. If you mess up -
whether it’s getting some data columns in the wrong place or
placing the SEO consultants META data in the wrong spot, just
acknowledge the mistake and move on. We’re human. Things happen.

6. Don’t switch domain names. If you sign up with an SEO
consultant, don’t start with one domain and then get a notion
about introducing a new one. It throws the whole program off
track.

7. Don’t change your page names. If you have a page
called newproducts.asp, don’t change it to new-products.html
after the SEO program begins. The change will just confuse
search engine spiders and hinder or delay high rankings. 8.
Don’t insert “alt” tags after the SEO program begins.
“Alt”
tags with images are for search engine consultants to manage.
They’re in the best position to know when “alt” tags might be
appropriate. If you add them on your own, you may ruin the
delicate balancing act SEO consultants perform with many page
factors.

9. Avoid altering page title tags. If an SEO consultant
has a title tag strategy you approve, don’t go back in a week
and change it. Some pages can work with a company name in the
title tag, others won’t.

10. Keep an open mind. Clients and consultants both need
an open mind as creative ideas and approaches are expressed. A
client may suggest something unethical, but the consultant
should gently steer them away from the tactic. If a consultant
finds a useful way of introducing a links directory on the Web
site, give it some thought. Just because your Web site lacks a
directory doesn’t mean it can’t support one. How can you have
reciprocal links without one

There are books and books and more books written on this topic because there are so many different ways of going about this.

I've found that there are a few different things, or basics, that you can do that in most cases is enough to at least get you in the search results.

    1. Submit your site – http://www.webdev101.com/tips/submit-your-site/

    2. Focus on the basics – http://www.webdev101.com/tips/search-engine-results-page-serp/

After that it's all up to you. You have to give your site some time there-after to be crawled by the search engines, but then there are a million tedious and time-consuming steps that can be taken to get you towards the top.

Notice I didn't say to the top, because the top results can change daily and you've got to keep up to stay up!

    Hi,

No, SEO doesn't cost anything, It's how you organize and structure your site so that the search engine spiders come to your site and index it so that people can find it. Since there are billions of websites out there, you may get listed but you'll probably just be added to the bottom of the list unless you use search engine optimization.

The way to optimize your site is to use the right keyword-focused content. If you want to know what that entails, here's an article that explains it: http://www.simple-internet-strategies.com/search-optimization.html

There are ways to pay Google to get to the top of the list but you would be clearly marked as an advertiser and therefore, you probably wouldn't get clicked on as often as the unpaid listings. I don't have stats to back that up but it makes sense, doesn't it? Who willingly listens to an advertiser? :-)

    Best Regards,

    Healthy Mom

You can find a list of SEO consultants recommended by Rand Fishkin here http://www.seomoz.org/articles/recommended.php But our SEO Firm http://www.uptrendhits.com/ is yet to be part of that list.

There are a few good SEO analysis tools out there for checking your rankings. Some are free, some are not.

    and web position gold.

however, google analytics and regular analytic software can be used to monitor your SEO performance. Look over time from when you started optimizing the site to now. Is there an increase in daily traffic? What keywords are people using to find your site? Are they coming from the search engines or from referrals?

Monitoring your back links also is a good performance metric.
domain-pop.com is decent but there are a lot out there as well.

How to find a good SEO Company? The plain fact is that there are very few excellent SEO companies but there are tens of thousands of SEO companies that advertise their poor quality services. It is an unregulated and relatively new industry in considerable demand, so this is not so surprising.

Good SEO companies are in great demand and the first thing NOT to do is use one that offers their services on Yahoo answers! No professional SEO that is any good has the time to solicit clients through such a medium or even needs to do so.

Here is the procedure I recommend.

Start by looking here http://www.seoconsultants.com/ which is about the nearest you can get to peer reviewed SEO consultants directory. Draw up a list of (say 10) companies whose web presence and spectrum of services meet with your approval.

Then make a simple initial approach to these companies and reduce the 10 to a short list of 3 or 4 based on the quality of their response (as you see it) and their understanding of your requirements.

Now interview the companies on your shortlist and include the following questions and requests:

    1. Ask for 5+ references and current clients and make sure you follow them all up taking notes along the way.

    2. What type of reporting will they provide?

    3. Do they offer Return On Investment (ROI) analysis?

    4. Can they assure you that the optimization strategies and methods used will be ethical and hence guarantee no penalties for your website?

    5. Do they place a link on their clients sites to their site? If they do you can reject them right away.

    6. Ask to see a sample contract. Check that it says 'what is' and 'what isn't' required on the clients part and also details what they say they will do.

    7. How many hours will they put into working on your site?

    8. Make sure you will not be 'ransomed' if you decide not to use them any more at some stage.

    9. Do they outsource any of the work? If they do you can reject them right away.

    10. What results can you expect and over what time scales?

Once you have the answers to these questions for the companies on your short list you will find making a correct choice quite straightforward.

One last thing. The best SEOs in the world work for themselves because they make more money that way and those that choose to have clients do not come cheap so if you want a good ROI don't look for a bargin.

    Good luck!
